Research highlights ► We analyzed the pros and cons of three advanced quay crane systems. ► We then proposed a comprehensive structure to evaluate the aforesaid systems. ► Stowage, safety, productivity and cost were proven the critical evaluation factors.
Abstract Choosing a suitable advanced quay crane (Q/C) is a complex problem for terminal operators because numerous factors must be considered simultaneously. A two-phased method is developed in this study to deal with this problem. The first phase identifies the determinants influencing selection of advanced Q/Cs by applying exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and thereby constructs a hierarchical structure. The second phase applies fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to compare alternatives in terms of the structure established in the first phase. The case of the newest terminal at Kaohsiung port is studied empirically and the 40-foot twin-lift Q/C is chosen as the most suitable alternative.
