Abstract We have found that under the action of a dawn-dusk electric field, charged particles in the magnetic field configuration of the magnetotail will undergo both a dawn-dusk and latitude separation. The magnetic mirror point of the particles will also rise and fall. On the basis of this regular pattern of motion, we have interpreted the complex structure of the magnetospheric field-aligned current system.
