Abstract Decisions in mineral exploration require the utilisation and combination of variety of types of information provided by technically skilled experts. Predictive maps can be drawn up with the assistance of geographic information systems (GIS). BRGM has developed a raster-based GIS software, named Synergis, which enables direct use of the satellite imagery and interactive graphic processing of a wide variety of data including from structural geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineralogy and socio-economic information. An investigation for the location of favourable areas in a gold-bearing shear zone in southern Brittany, France is described as an example. A Thematic Mapper interpretation was integrated into a reference model constructed on the basis of data from the main gold deposits in France.
