Abstract The Space Infrared Telescope Facility, to be put into high earth orbit toward the end of the 1990s, will open broad new vistas for the study of the objects in the Solar System and planetary systems around other stars at infrared wavelengths. This paper focuses on three topics to which SIRTF will make fundamental contributions; the search for Kuiper-belt comets, IR spectroscopy of comets, and the study of circumstellar planetary debris disks.
