AbstractResearch on liquid foams of high dryness fraction is reviewed. It is shown that their properties differ markedly from those of much wetter foams of low dryness fraction (bubbly mixtures). A criterion based on how the speed of sound varies with density is suggested for distinguishing between the two foam regimes. Dry foams are marked by a low speed of sound, relatively high stresses opposing rates of shear, high acoustic and shock wave attenuation, as well as high thermal insulation. Practical applications of these properties are discussed, including the simulation of high speed flows.
