Abstract The planetary energy balance over the continents in July 1979 is obtained as a residual from re-analyzed FGGE IIIb data from the ECMWF. This is compared with Nimbus 7 ERB NFOV data. Over mid-latitude North America and the Eurasian continent the correspondence between these totally independent estimates is generally good for averages over large regions on time-scales of approximately one week or longer. Elsewhere the correspondence is mainly poor.
