Abstract The SIR-A, SIR-B data and airborne radar images have been applied to lithological discrimination, tectonic analysis and mineral exploration in China. Based on the understanding of imaging mechanism of radar, the radar images have been integrated with other remotely sensed data, and two geometric correction methods and enhancement techniques for geological information extraction have been developed. This paper presents the major achievements of radar imagery application in geology, shows the ability of radar in detecting lineaments and volcanic structures and discusses the function of radar imagery in rock units discrimination and mineral exploration.
