Abstract The basic concepts of charged particle acceleration in magnetic current sheets are reviewed, and related to conditions at the dayside magnetopause and in the geomagnetic tail. Particular topics discussed include the effect of magnetosheath flow on plasma acceleration at the dayside magnetopause, and the acceleration of ions in the tail during field “dipolarization” at substorm onset. We also discuss the evolution of the tail leading up to the latter event in the light of recent results derived from ISEE-1 and -2 spacecraft data.
