AbstractAn alternative approach to classical cross-over adjustment was developed for small ocean basins such as the Baltic, the Mediterranean and the North Sea. This alternative approach is compared to a classical cross-over method in order to show advantages and disadvantages for each method in the three test areas. The comparison is done using simulated altimeter data which include white noise as a first step towards actual observations. The alternative approach depends on the availability of several selected tide gauges for which space coordinates (such as GPS data) are available. Several test configurations are considered for which associated criteria are established.
