Abstract Developments in the aerospace industry have now reached a stage where it is possible to envisage the construction of a partially hypersonic spaceplane. This article examines possible uses of such a vehicle and discusses the technological challenges involved. The author describes current efforts in various countries and argues both that research into hypersonic flight is vital for the future and that France is not yet doing enough. Young people in particular should seize the opportunity of working in this field.
