Abstract We consider the relative contributions of different sources of magnetospheric magnetic field to the Dst-variation using the dynamic model of the Earth's magnetosphere. The calculated magnetic field was obtained from solar wind observation and geomagnetic indices for the magnetic storm of 23–24 Mar 1969. The main attention will be paid to the current system of the magnetospheric tail whose rapid variations enable fast changes in Dst.
