Abstract The operating principles of modern absolute radiometers are discussed and the methods of their characterization, that is the accurate determination of the uncertainties, are described. In view of this analysis, the results of the solar constant determinations of the last 6 years are reviewed and an estimate of their uncertainties given. Procedures for the strategy of future experiments are recommended.
