Abstract An important problem in the demand for transportation services is to predict the demand for the services of new modes. One approach is to construct models of the demand for “abstract” modes. That is, modes which are defined only in terms of their service characteristics. This effort was pioneered by Quandt and Baumol, but other models with the abstract mode trait have been developed also. This paper summarizes four of these approaches, compares them, and evaluates them from the standpoint of their ability to fulfill certain criteria of reasonableness in their forecasting properties.
