Abstract Hypervelocity impact experiments have been performed at the Munich Plasma Accelerator using Solar Max thermal blankets as targets. Glass beads from 22 to 181 μm in diameter (1.4·10−8 to 7.8·10−6 g) were accerelated to velocities from 4.5 to 17.1 km/s. 25 impacts with unambiguous projectile size and velocity were recorded and all 25 projectiles perforated the first layer (25 μm Kapton) without showing marginal perforation features. The hole sizes in the first layer correspond well with the perforation equation given by Carey et al. (1985), but a systematic deviation can be observed for small and fast projectiles. A different number of the following 6 μm Mylar films were perforated. The best fit of crater data with projectile parameters is achieved when the equivalent crater volume (the volume of the displaced target material) is plotted against the kinetic energy: the equivalent crater volume is proportional to the kinetic energy.
