Abstract The Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer, to be flown onboard the SOHO spacecraft, will be one of six experiments dedicated to an in-depth investigation of the solar corona. The scientific goals of the CDS are discussed, and how they have influenced the design, manufacture, and operation of the CDS instrument.
