Abstract Observations relevant to Alfven's Critical Velocity Effect, of the several shaped-charge releases in the ionosphere are compared with three generations of a macroscopic model of these releases. Good agreement is found with experiments which have reported a low ion yield, but major discrepancies remain with the Porcupine experiment which has the largest yield yet reported.
