AbstractThis paper explores some of the links between changing age distributions in the affluent countries of Europe, North America and Asia (notably Japan), the growth in tourism to large developing countries, such as India, China and Brazil, and developments in the ways in which long haul transportation services are provided (for example the possibility of low cost carriers entering this market on a large scale). It considers the institutional and other challenges to the growth of these markets and also ways in which the tourist recipient countries can extract the maximum economic benefits.
