AbstractDecreasing soil strength to facilitate transplanting of rice seedlings is one of the main objectives of puddling. Shear strength characteristics of wet loam soil before and after puddling were studied with a vane shear apparatus for a wide range of shear velocity (4.5–1330 mm/s). Relationships between shear strength, secant modulus and shear velocity were established to determine the velocity independent strength parameters. The values of these parameters and cone index decreased with increasing levels of puddling, but increased with time after puddling due to the thixotropic hardening of the soil. Degree of puddle, derived from shear yield strength ratio was found to be a suitable index for quantification of puddling and thixotropic effects on mechanical characteristics of the soil.
