Abstract The development of an imaging gas scintillation proportional counter which utilises a channel multiplier array as the readout element is discussed. Preliminary experimental results and theoretical considerations indicate that spatial and energy resolutions of below 500 μm and 8% respectively should be achievable at an X-ray energy of 6 keV.
