Abstract The most publicised use of magnetometer data from four spacecraft is to determine the local electrrical current density. However, in addition, there are (at least) two other treatments of the four spacecraft data which we fell will need routine implementation. Here we identify and describe techniques that we call the ‘wave telescope’ and ‘discontinuity analysis’, as well as that estimating the current density, which we term the ‘curlometer’. Each technique involves a priori assumptions about the nature of signals detected on the spacecraft and, using parallels with other areas of geophysics, we outline a general strategy for approaching the analysis of multipoint data.
