Abstract High time resolution measurements of Earth rotation and atmospheric angular momentum (AAM) and their interpretation have been proposed as a major research thrust for the 1990s. An extensive campaign, SEARCH'92, is now under way to obtain these measurements utilizing all space geodetic techniques and to collect the best available complementary geophysical, oceanographic and atmospheric data. This paper discusses its motivation and scientific benefits and reviews international cooperation in several measurement campaigns with particular emphasis on SEARCH'92. Recent analysis results are highlighted.
