Abstract The expression for the perpendicular saturation temperature of ions heated by a low-frequency shear Alfvén wave due to nonresonant interaction in low- plasmas has been derived. This expression is closely related to the frequency, polarization, and amplitude of the low-frequency shear Alfvén wave. The derived expression has been verified by performing simulations. Because of the Doppler effect, the saturation temperature is different for different polarized waves. The saturation value of the perpendicular ion temperature has a lower limit for the left-handed polarized Alfvén wave and a higher limit for the right-handed polarized Alfvén wave. The results might be helpful to explain the heating of ions in the solar wind.
