Abstract The in situ measurements have shown the existence of the energetic heavy ions of ionospheric origin moving upwards along the geomagnetic field lines. The GEOS-1 and −2, ISEE-1 and −2, PROGNOZ-7, SCATHA, DE-1 and AMPTE spacecrafts have measured the charge state and energy spectrum of these ions. We have generalized the dispesion equation for using this formulation - the normalized wave vector, phase velocity, group velocity and convective growth/decay rate of these waves in the plasmapause region have been computed. The effects of the charge state of ionospheric ions and their temperature anisotropies are discussed. The illustrated features of these waves are discussed as a diagnostic tool.
