Abstract The Meteosat system is described, together with a description of its performance during the operational year of the FGGE. The paper starts with an overall description, including both the spacecraft and ground system. A review is made of its performance in respect of image taking, dissemination of data, data collection from environmental platforms and the extraction of meteorological parameters. Quality assessments are given, and the paper ends with a discussion of temporary service interruptions during the year.
