Abstract Large scale (100 : 1) information compression must be performed in order to deduce the useful geophysical information from ab ionogram. Attempts to do this with orthogonal transformations were unsatisfactory. Now we investigate a “structural approach” asigning the given image to a class of images the general structure of which is known (a priori information). In the process we distinguish three stages (levels) which are characterized by (1) arrays of pixels, (2) regions (objects) formed by linking pixels, (3) links between objects leading to structures exhibiting some a priori known features.
