Abstract The requirements for an accurate ionogram inversion are discussed briefly and quantitative estimates of possible accuracy are made using Dynasonde data. The presence of tilts in the ionosphere seriously limits the accuracy with which the effects of missing data (valleys, D-region) can be estimated. The very accurate range estimates from stationary phase [ca 60m] and evaluations of prevailing tilts are essential for reliable valley and underlying ionization corrections.
