Abstract In the wake of the discoveries of the magnetic properties of the planets made in the Seventies we review the roles played by the Kelvin-Helmholtz, Rayleigh-Taylor and Flute instabilities at planetary magnetospheric boundaries as well as hydromagnetic wave transmission properties across such boundaries.
