Abstract A number of theoretical issues which may effect our usual understanding of the term ‘reconnection’ in three dimensions and its subsequent application to the space and astrophysical environment are reviewed. In particular, we will review the meaning of reconnection in three dimensions, how periodic and non-periodic magnetic topologies alter the physics of reconnection, and how chaotic magnetic fields may effect the reconnection process.
