Abstract The oscillatory mechanism of thermocapillary convection in half floating zone is studied numerically. The condition depending on the gravity level and applied temperature difference for onset of the oscillation is obtained. Onset of oscillation is relatively easy in the case of a gravity environment than in the case of a low gravity environment for the liquid bridge with the same typical scale and geometrical aspect. This implies that there is a critical Bond number, and the oscillation is relatively easy to excite in the case of larger Bond number, which is associated with a higher gravity level. The results have been used to explain why the critical Marangoni number is larger in space experiments than on the ground, and also gives the influence of gravity on the onset of oscillation even in the low gravity environment.
