Abstract As data from recent spacecraft have proven that the ionosphere provides significant fluxes of energetic ions to the overall magnetosphere, it became of prime interest to carry out quantitative studies of ion transport from the ionosphere under the influence of the magnetospheric electric and magnetic fields. Several teams have developed numerical studies of test particle trajectories using either 2D or 3D field models. This paper reviews the main features of the models and shows how their results have been used to organize experimental data.
