Abstract The paper refers to the driving behaviour of the members of 16 Tasmanian multiproblem families and their descendents. The series consists of a total of 764 persons (546 over the age of 12 yr). Their 1173 major traffic convictions, their 2511 criminal offences and their social pathology have been recorded. The traffic convictions are analysed under the headings of car stealing, moving offences, non-moving offences and accidents. The car stealing, the ratio of non-moving to moving offences, and the accidents, are considerably higher than for the population in general. The discussion relates the driving offences to the social pathology and criminal records of these multiproblem families, and to their cultural characteristics. The driving offences are used as a means of indicating the social characteristics of these families. The findings are thereby related to the concept of “social handicap”.
