Abstract The nature and strength of low-frequency MHD turbulence in association with fast-forward, oblique shock waves is investigated using Helios 1 magnetic field and plasma data. Power and coherence spectra were computed and compared for the pre- and post-shock regions for the magnetic field, velocity and density fluctuations in the frequency range 3.9 × 10−4 Hz to 1.2 × 10−2 Hz. One illustrative example is discussed with cross references to the values and trends in other cases. The fluctuations were found to be transverse throughout and Alfvéndominated over discrete frequency ranges. The fall-off of power with frequency was f−1.4±0.05.
