Abstract Empirical relations have been determined between the cloud coverage and the surface global radiation for the Hungarian station Budapest and for the Transdanubial and Great Plain regions of Hungary. A few differences were found in the formulae for the different regions, however these were not too large. The purpose of this investigation was to check the applicability of the formulae for the regions of Central and Southern Europe, in order to investigate the geographical variations of the connections between the cloud coverage and surface global radiation.
