Abstract A development programme, sponsored by ESA and carried out in several European laboratories, on submillimetre heterodyne components and instrumentation for applications in space is nearing completion and will be discussed. A study to identify critical areas of a space heterodyne receiver, operating between 300 and 500 GHz, has been completed. A demonstration model for this frequency range is now under construction.
