Abstract The origins of the three kinds of extra-terrestrial bodies, meteorites, asteroids and comets can be traced to the origin of solar system. From a study of their properties, a generic relatinship of the form interstellar gas and dust condensing in the primitive solar nebula leading to the formation of comets, the comets getting degassed and ablated to become asteroids and the asteroids on fragmentation due to collisions becoming meteorites, is advocated here. The isotopic abundances of carbon are suggested as the key to unlock the mystery of this relationship.
