AbstractThe quantitative establishement of soil parameters and the relationship between the running gear and the soil have yet to be flully explored and resolved. The author's analytical investigations of these problems have emphasized determination of the contact surface for pneumatic tires, based on tire measurements, load on the tire and inflation pressure. A summary is given of mathematical models which establish pertinent parameters influencing tire traction on deformable soil. Some results of tests to validate the models are briefly discussed. Attention is drawn to the effect of slip velocity on traction, and the acceptability of a shear stress formula is questioned.
