Abstract Chinese scientific ballooning activities commenced at the end of the 1970's. During the past 13 years, a well integrated balloon technology capability has been developed. This includes balloon fabric research and production, balloon manufacture, flight electronics development and a launching facility. Recently, we have started to develop balloons having a larger volume and capable of lifting heavier payloads. We have also developed the ability to support long duration balloon flights. We are currently preparing a LDBF program in collaboration with the USSR. In this programme the balloons will be launched from the Northeast region of China and recovered in the Southern part of the Soviet Union. These areas of development will continue to be important features of our program during the next few years. This paper presents a short review of Chinese Scientific Balloon developments and indicates the progress that we have made in recent years. We also present our development plans for the future. Some of the Chinese scientific experiments and important instruments are also described in this paper.
