Abstract During the years 1987 – 1989 four new balloon experiments observed the 511 keV electron-positron annihilation line source at the Galactic Center. These observations are reviewed. The data are consistent with a two-component model, consisting of a compact and variable source plus a steady diffuse source. The compact object seems to have flared in intensity in the fall of 1988 reaching a flux level of (4–8)10−4 photons cm−2s−1.
