Abstract Parallel NIMBUS-7- CZCS images of chlorophyll, seston and temperature are analysed during an upwelling event off West Africa in February–March 1984. The CZCS sensor provides information on the distribution and type of phytoplankton of the different tropical water masses. The productivity capacities of the eutrophic strict upwelling zone, of the complex offshore boundary zone and of the oligotrophic waters are described using an estimate of the net production rate (net change in chlorophyll per day) measured by using CZCS successive images. New sensitive zones for production are described.
