Abstract This paper addresses automatic estimation of sea ice motion using two satellite images of the same area, taken at different times. The aim of this study was to arrive at an efficient (non-calculation intensive), but at the same time accurate algorithm, based on area correlation and the image pyramid method. A new addition in this approach is the search method. Instead of performing a total search in a given area, a two-dimensional binary search is used. This can reduce the number of correlations by orders of magnitude, depending on the size of the search area. The results from this system was compared with a manually estimated motion in pairs of satellite images. The two vector fields showed a high degree of correspondence, depending on different factors that will be discussed.
