AbstractBased on the Rate Process Theory, an expression of soil shear strength as a function of shear rate and normal pressure was established as: 1n τ = C 1 + C 2 1 n γ ̇ + C 3 1 n (1+ C 6 σ n ). The expression was verified with a series of laboratory tests in a shear rate range of 5–30 s−1 and in various soil conditions. Experimental data also showed that the increases in soil shear strength with decrease in water content or with increase in volume weight are both intensified by the rise in shear rate.
