AbstractA theory was developed to describe the loss of momentum due to the shear stresses in the near-wake in an incompressible two-dimensional steady base flow. In the first section a general theory for the loss of momentum was developed. In a subsequent section, the general equations were used to develop a theory to predict the pressure at the reattachment point. In the last section, the general theory was applied to the development of a method that allows the prediction of the influence of base bleed on the base pressure. By comparing the theory with experiments, good agreement was obtained.
