Abstract A study of road accident trends in Nigeria between the period 1960 and 1989 revealed a sharp increase in fatal accident occurrence. Between 1960 and 1969, it was observed that over 18,000 deaths occurred as a result of road accidents. By the third decade (1980–1989), this figure had increased to about five times, i.e. more than 92,000 deaths. Reasons for the severity of road accidents in Nigeria are discussed.
