AbstractIn this paper the Tethered Satellite System (TSS) is presented in its various aspects of scientific and applicative utilization, program development and technical realization. First, the basic features of TSS are introduced, together with its potential applications which have been preliminarily proposed to NASA.Second, some aspects of TSS motion are described, to present the dynamical peculiarities of the system. Further, the relevant features of the mathematical models being used to simulate TSS dynamics are discussed.Third, the Italian role in TSS design and development is sketched. In fact, the TSS program is part of the planned Italian space activity and is to be developed in close cooperation between the U.S. and Italian space agencies. In this framework, some preliminary results obtained by Aeritalia (Italian Prime Contractor) personnel are also presented.
