Abstract Asteroseismology is a new field of stellar physics. Its scientific return is of primary importance. Consequences will fall on different fields of physics as well as astronomy and cosmology. High precision photometry from space is the only technique able to detect non radial oscillations in a significant set of stars with different masses, ages, angular momentum and chemical composition. Technically, the experience is quite simple. During an observation run of several days, a reasonably small telescope will collect enough photons to detect periodic signals of relative amplitude as low as 10−6, coherent over several days. The frequency resolution is easily achieved by continuous observations spanning over 20 days. However, this field is still staying in its infancy, and the obstacles (essentially diplomatic and political) to achieve a stellar seismology experiment remain difficult to overcome. Despite the early proposals in 1981 and a large support from the scientific community, all experiences are still waiting for a launch. Then this talk will be based only on conjectures, not on results.
