Abstract As a new index characterizing the diurnal variation of foF2 the half difference between daily maximum and minimum values AfoF2 is introduced. Deviations of more than 20% from the running average are characterized as disturbances distinguishing positive and negative deviations. This index applied to the data of many ionospheric stations during two solar activity minima (1963 through 1965 and 1985 through 1987) showed its sensitivity to regional disturbances as well as a clear difference between the two periods in relation to the number of “disturbed days”.
