AbstractUse of NDVI at district spatial scale for global change studies needs understanding of inter annual variations among the districts as a function of natural precipitation, and the intra-district variations due to N-S (Vertical: V) and E-W (Horizontal: H) orientation, degree of irrigation and its canal and tube well components besides the role of industrial land-use. The paper presents the results of these aspects over the trans-gangetic agroecological zone. Increased rainfall in the year increased the mean (M) NDVI values for all the districts, the range being 5.87 to 48.61%. The 12 districts of Haryana state have been categorized into categories: (a) < 15% (b) 15–30% and (c) > 30% change in NDVI. An attempt was also made to explain the variation of V, H and M as a function of N-S/E-W orientation for some contrasting 6 districts of Haryana state. The results have been discussed in terms of variations in natural precipitation systems, gross area under agriculture and irrigation sources. The study of variations in V, H and M enable understanding of short time scale nuances in the NDVI based green-house effect related signals.
