Abstract The four years of IUE operation have revealed that the ultraviolet region of the spectrum contributes a dominant share of the emerging energy from cataclysmic variables and provides important clues to the physical nature of these systems. The implications of the continuum flux distributions and line spectra for the determination of the accretion rates and mass loss rates are considered.
