Abstract The dynamics of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) in a magnetized plasma consisting of cold electrons, hot nonthermal distributed electrons, as well as stationary ions are investigated through the derivation of Zakharov–Kuznetsov (ZK) equation by the reductive perturbation theory. The dependence of the EAWs characteristics, namely the wave amplitude, width, energy, and the electric field on the system parameters e.g. electron nonthermality parameter, the magnetic field and the obliqueness are studied. Moreover, the stability analysis is carried out to check the presence of the stable and unstable solitons. The results found in this article could be useful in interpreting the electrostatic waves in the Earth auroral zone based on the observation by viking satellite observations.
