Abstract In order to identify ionospheric echo signals on ionograms in real time a simulation model was established as a set of FORTRAM subroutines. The model reproduces typical situations and can be used as a source of signals for testing purposes. A finite set of typical echo signals embedded in noise can be generated, different pulse shapes (rectangular, bell-shaped, slit type) can be selected. The noise is assumed to be narrow band gaussian; it is produced as a polyharmonic mixture with random amplitudes and phases the average power of which can also be selected. A (limited) repetition tendency of ionospheric echoes produced by frequency-varying ionosondes is taken into account too. Signal shaping produced in the intermediate frequency amplifier, and at detection and recording must also be considered. The model is helpful for testing one-dimensional (i.e. fixed frequency) signal identification but also for two-dimensional images as produced as ionosonde output. In this application half-tone image with 1024 × 1024 or 512 × 512 pixels were used.
